The EXCELSIOR SCHOLARSHIP, like other forms of financial aid that enables students to go to a State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY) college without paying tuition fees. This scholarship is available for students who qualify and are enrolled in SUNY or CUNY institutions. In the academic year 2024-2025.

The Excelsior Scholarship offers money for tuition to qualified students who go to public colleges and universities in New York State (SUNY and CUNY). This scholarship, along with other financial aid programs for students, helps them go to a SUNY college without paying tuition fees. However, it doesn’t help with other costs like fees, housing, food, and books.
This program offers financial aid to students. Nevertheless, it transforms into a loan if a student fails to meet the residency condition. The aid remains as a scholarship if a student becomes ineligible and loses it during their undergraduate studies before graduating. If it turns into a loan, no interest will be charged on it.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify for this scholarship, an applicant must:
- – Be a New York State resident and have lived in the state for 12 consecutive months before the term begins.
- – Be a citizen of the United States or an eligible non-citizen.
- – Have either graduated from a U.S. high school, obtained a high school equivalency diploma, or passed a federally approved “Ability to Benefit” test, as determined by the Commissioner of the State Education Department.
- – Have a total federal adjusted gross income of $125,000 or less.
- – Be working towards an undergraduate degree at a State University of New York (SUNY) or City University of New York (CUNY) college, which includes statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University.
- – Be enrolled in at least 12 credits per term that count towards your degree and earn a minimum of 30 credits each year that are applicable to your degree program.
- – If previously attended college before the academic year for which the scholarship is sought, have completed at least 30 credits each year (continuously enrolled) that count towards your degree program before applying for the Excelsior Scholarship.
- – Be in a non-default status on any student loan obtained through a New York State or federal education loan program, or on the repayment of any New York State award.
- – Adhere to the terms of any service conditions imposed by a New York State award previously received.
- – Sign a contract agreeing to live in New York State for the duration of the award period and, if employed during that time, work in New York State.
