SCOPE
The foundation called the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was founded by the U.S. Congress in the year 1986 with the purpose of acting as a dynamic tribute to commemorate the extensive efforts of Senator Barry Goldwater. Senator Goldwater dedicated 56 years of his life to his nation, serving both as a soldier and a skilled diplomat, and contributing 30 years of his time as a member of the United States Senate.

The Goldwater Foundation offers scholarships to second-year and third-year college students who plan to pursue careers in research within the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering fields. This initiative ensures that the United States is generating the necessary number of skilled experts required in these vital areas.

Throughout its three-decade history, the Goldwater Scholarships have been granted to numerous undergraduates, many of whom have subsequently received prestigious honors such as the Graduate Fellowship from the National Science Foundation, the Rhodes Scholarship, the Churchill Scholarship, and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship. These awards provide support for the graduate studies of our Scholars. Presently, individuals who were Goldwater Scholars can be observed carrying out research that contributes to the country’s defense, discovering remedies for catastrophic illnesses, and educating upcoming generations of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers.

SCHOLAR BENEFITS AND AWARD
Every recipient of the Goldwater Scholarship is granted a sum equivalent to the expenses of tuition, obligatory fees, textbooks, and accommodation and food costs. This financial assistance is reduced by any other funding received, with a cap of $7,500 per entire academic year.
Students honored with the award during their second year of college can anticipate aid for up to two years (4 semesters) or until they complete their degree, if that happens earlier. Meanwhile, students bestowed with the award during their third year can anticipate support for up to one year (2 semesters) or until they finish their degree, if that occurs sooner.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Qualify as a enrolled second-year or third-year student working towards a degree at an officially recognized 2- or 4-year institution of advanced education, and maintain a full-time enrollment status during the academic semesters when benefiting from the Foundation’s scholarship aid.
Plan to pursue a career in research within the fields of natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
Maintain a minimum college grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
Hold U.S. citizenship or nationality from regions such as the 50 States, District of Columbia, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, United States Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, as well as other U.S. territories or possessions; or be a permanent resident. A permanent resident should provide a copy of their Permanent Resident Card, also referred to as a Green Card.
