Most of the languages that the CLA Program offers don’t need students to have any previous experience with Those Languages. The program is looking for students who like different things and come from many different subjects and jobs. This way, it can show how diverse the United States is. Students are chosen because they’re dedicated to learning languages and they have plans to use these language skills in their future studies or jobs.
SCHOLARSHIPS DETAILS.
The CLS Program gives chances for American students in colleges and universities to learn languages and cultures important for America’s interactions with the world.
American students from undergraduate and graduate levels in U.S. colleges and universities all over the nation, spend eight to ten weeks studying one of fourteen languages in an intensive program abroad. The CLS Program is designed to help them quickly improve their language skills and develop an important understanding of different cultures in areas that are crucial for U.S. national security and economic success. The program is supported by the U.S. Department of State and funded by the U.S. Government. The American Council for International Education helps in carrying out the program.
A part of the CLS Program offers opportunities for American undergraduate students to learn Arabic, Chinese, and Russian at the beginner level through virtual means.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- To Qualify, You Need To:
- To apply for this opportunity, you need to be a citizen or national of the United States at the time you apply.
- People who have Permanent Resident status, also known as Green Card holders, cannot apply, even if they plan to become U.S. citizens before the program starts.
- You should be at least 18 years old by May 15, 2024.
You should be studying in a U.S. college or university and working towards a degree at the undergraduate (associate or bachelor’s) or graduate (master’s, doctoral, professional) level when you apply.
This is for students who are pursuing a degree. If you’re only taking separate classes or continuing education courses, you can’t apply.
You must be studying in a college or university in the U.S. that is officially recognized. If you’re getting your degree from a foreign college that isn’t in the U.S. or its territories, you can’t apply, even if it’s accredited by a U.S. agency.
If you’re in an associate or bachelor’s degree program, you must have finished at least one full year of study (that’s two semesters or three quarters) by the time the CLS Program starts in the summer of 2023.
You should also be enrolled at your college or university during the fall term of 2022. There are some exceptions to this rule, so read the following carefully:
If you’re not taking classes at your school during the fall term, make sure you’re enrolled. Different schools have different rules for staying enrolled, and you’ll need to show a letter from your school’s registrar that says you were enrolled.
If you’re taking time off from your studies to join a study abroad program that lasts a term or a year, or if you’re doing a substantial internship, you can ask for an exception to the enrollment rule. But exceptions are only given in these two situations, and each case will be looked at individually.
