DURATION AND REWARDS
The duration of scholarships varies, lasting from a minimum of 1 year up to a maximum of 5 years, depending on the specific requirements of the degree pursued. As part of the SMART program, scholars are obligated to work for the Department of Defense (DoD) as civilian employees for a period equal to the number of years they received funding for their degrees.
For Those Applying As Undergraduates, The Following Criteria Must Be Met:
Enrollment at a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency is mandatory.
Applicants should be able to present their college transcript for the fall 2023 term or an earlier term. Advanced Placement (AP) coursework is not considered college credit.
For Those Applying As Graduate Students, The Following Guidelines Apply:
You can either be currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency or be awaiting confirmation of admission.
If you are in the process of waiting for admission, you must have received acceptance for the fall term of 2024.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- The SMART program accepts applications from August to December each year, and successful applicants will receive awards the following spring.
- To Be Eligible, All Applicants Must Meet The Following Criteria:
- Nationality: Applicants must hold citizenship in one of the following countries: the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom at the time of application.
- Age: Applicants must be 18 years old or above as of August 1, 2024.
- Degree Funding: All applicants must request a minimum of 1 year of degree funding before their graduation, which should commence from the program start date.
- Summer Internship: All multi-year scholars must complete at least one summer internship.
- Post-Graduation Employment: Successful applicants must be willing to accept post-graduation employment with the Department of Defense (DoD).
- Academic Standing: Applicants must be students in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Field Of Study: The scholarship is available for those pursuing technical undergraduate or graduate degrees in any of the 24 STEM courses listed above.
- Academic Documentation: All applicants must be able to provide a fall 2023 college transcript from a regionally accredited US college or university. Alternatively, they should be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited US college or university.
- Military Status: Active duty military members applying for the SMART Scholarship must be separated or on terminal leave on or before August 1, 2024, to be eligible. Reserve and National Guard members are eligible to apply, but current ROTC participants with a future service commitment are not eligible to apply.
