The organization Great Minds in STEM (GMiS) is delighted to introduce the GMiS California Medical Scholarships. These scholarships aim to provide financial aid and encouragement to students from underrepresented backgrounds who are pursuing careers in the medical field within the state of California.

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS
GMiS grants these scholarships in tribute to three remarkable individuals who strongly believed in empowering students to fulfill their aspirations of improving the quality of human life, particularly in the fields of mental health, rehabilitative and geriatric medicine, and disabilities. The scholarships are granted as one-time awards and are not renewable. A total of $30,000 in scholarship funds will be distributed in the year 2023.

GREAT MINDS IN STEM SCHOLARSHIP BENEFITS
Each chosen student will be given a $5,000 educational grant. Each year, a maximum of ten (10) scholarships will be awarded to deserving recipients.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply, interested students should fill out the application form available on the internet and submit the necessary documents as supporting evidence. The application process for the academic year 2023-24 commences on March 1st, 2023.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- The GMiS California Medical Scholarship Program requires candidates to meet the following criteria:
- Belonging to a minority group in the medical field.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. or Puerto Rican institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA (out of 4.0).
- Be admitted and planning to enroll as a first-year or second-year medical student at one of the specified universities for the 2023-24 academic year, including the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, and the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine.
- Be pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.
- Be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, or recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA).
- Show recent volunteer work supporting seniors and/or individuals with disabilities, particularly within underrepresented communities.
- Preference will be given to applicants who:
- Focus their medical studies on mental health, rehabilitative, geriatric medical specialties, or individuals with disabilities.
- Have earned an undergraduate or graduate degree in a STEM field of study.
GREAT MINDS IN STEM SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS
- Requirements for the GMiS California Medical Scholarship Program include:
- Current Resume (limited to two pages).
- Biographical Sketch: Share a paragraph (maximum 250 words) describing yourself.
Optional Letter of Recommendation: Obtain a letter of support from a faculty, medical professional, or adult community member who can vouch for your potential as a future medical doctor. The letter must be uploaded directly to the application portal by you.
Personal Statement: Compose an essay (up to 500 words) responding to the following two-part question. Address both elements as a single essay and include specific examples as needed:
- How have your life experiences (cultural, family, school, volunteerism, etc.) contributed to the development of your skills and qualities that define you today as a future medical professional?
- How have you applied those skills and qualities in serving the elderly or individuals with disabilities?
Official or Unofficial Undergraduate Transcript: Provide the transcript from the institution where you earned your undergraduate degree.
- First-year medical students must submit their undergraduate transcript.
- Second-year medical students must submit their current medical school transcript.
- All transcripts should be uploaded on the application portal as a single PDF document. Photos of transcripts will not be accepted (e.g., jpg, gif, png).
- The transcript must display your cumulative GPA, weighted or unweighted, or it will be considered invalid. GMiS does not calculate GPA; it must be reported by your institution.
- If your institution uses a clearinghouse to send transcripts, have them email the transcript directly to you. After receiving it, print, scan, and upload it to your application.
- If you receive a hard copy of your transcript, open the officially sealed document, scan it, and upload it with your application.
- If you meet the criteria, you can apply for the CA Medical Scholarship through the provided portal.
