If your disability persists for over one year, you are eligible for a lasting disability allowance. Alternatively, if your disability endures for a consecutive timeframe of no less than half a year and no more than one year, you qualify for a short-term disability allowance. It’s important to note that a permanent disability grant doesn’t imply lifelong disbursement, but rather an extension beyond the 12-month mark.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for this program, you must meet the following conditions:
Hold citizenship in South Africa, possess permanent residency, or have refugee status, and currently reside within South Africa at the time of your application.
- Fall within the age range of 18 to 59 years.
- Not be under the care of a state institution.
- Possess a 13-digit, barcoded identification document (ID).
- Maintain an income not exceeding R86,280 if you are single or R172,560 if married.
- Not possess assets exceeding the value of R1,227,600 if you are single, or R2,455,200 if married.
- Undergo a medical evaluation administered by a state-appointed doctor to determine the extent of your disability.
- Provide past medical records and reports during both the application process and the assessment.
- The medical professional will compile a medical assessment report, which will subsequently be sent to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
- This report will remain valid for a period of three months from the date of assessment.
Please take note: If you are below the age of 18 and require constant care due to a disability, your primary caregiver has the option to apply for a Care Dependency Grant on your behalf. In case you lack an ID, you will need to complete an affidavit and provide evidence of your application for an ID from the Department of Home Affairs. If you have yet to initiate an ID application, you must do so within three months of submitting your grant application.
